2 New books! But not sure if anyone checks this besides me...

Well at least I can keep a running list of books I have read and want to read:
Here are 2 books that I have read recently which are highly recommended.

Lord Teach Us: The Lord's Prayer and the Christian Life
By William Willimon and Stanley Hauerwas
This is a relatively short book that is full of good stuff. It teaches some insights into the Lord's prayer and what that means for contemporary God-followers. It is very readable too.

Life On the Vine:Cultivating the Fruit of the Spirit in Christian Community
By Philip D. Kenneson
Well, this guy is a professor at Milligan College and I was able to take his main course called Christ and Culture. Kenneson is good at making Christians actually use their brains, and think about why we do much of what we do. Kit also went through the course too. Notice that this book is not a "how-to" in gaining the fruits of the Spirit. It is how to CULTIVATE in COMMUNITY our roots to produce these fruits of the Spirit. Big difference. However, if any of the students from NC read this it may give away some of my "original material" sources :)

Book I'm reading now (Jeremy)

Run With the Horses
by Eugene Peterson
This book is a devotional look at the life of Jeremiah. It has some chapters in there that are worth as much as pure Dahlonega gold. I have been reading the lengthy book of Jeremiah along with this one and it helps to read Peterson's thoughts when I take breaks from the Old Testament book.
I recommend it to everyone! ---Jeremy

When the Heart Waits

Author: Sue Monk Kidd

Description: this book is geared for mid-lifing women about the spiritual discipline of waiting, but I learned a lot from her experiences and truly enjoyed her writing style!

THIS IS A GOOD ONE! (From Jeremy)

Sit, Walk, Stand
by Watchman Nee
I found an old, beat up copy of this book on my shelf and read it recently. Wow. It is a great book that helps me feel better about much that we taught in Deeper :) It is always a good thing when you find something that you feel was directed by God for you to read or learn at a particular time. This book did that for me this week. It's very short and packed full of memorable quotes...

This looks like a winner (Jeremy)

Sacred Way: Spiritual Practices for Everyday Life
by Tony Jones
Review: I haven't read it yet, but it was recommended to me recently. It is supposed to avoid some the "spiritual insider language" that Foster, Willard, and spiritual classics employ from time to time. Sounds like a good book to give to anyone on spiritual disciplines...and that is needed. Somebody read it, and I'll try to get my hands on it too.

Casey's Favies

Hope you boys dont mind if I post some ideas for books too!!

Title: The Blessed
Author: Sharon McMahon Moffitt
Subject: "A Sinner reflects on living the Christian Life"
Readability: 2
Summary: Using the Beatitudes as a basis for discussion, the author leads us into reconsidering our relationship with Jesus. This may be a more appealing read for women, but has a lot of amazing things to say to anyone. (We have an outlet that sells this book for cheap!)

Title: Traveling Mercies
Author: Anne Lamott
Subject: "Some thoughts on faith"
Readability: 2
Summary: My favorite author! She is very liberal and uses some expressive language, so if those things offend you, dont read this book. Aside from those two differences from most Christian literature, Anne Lamott has some very interesting and thought-provoking things to say. Her creative-writing style and testimony are wonderful.

Title: The Signature of Jesus
Author: Brennan Manning
Subject: Living in Christ
Readability: (1 =easy to 5 =difficult):2
Review: Some say Ragamuffin Gospel is his best, and others criticize him for being a little too steeped in psychological/counseling advice. This book will change your outlook on life...it's a great primer into deeper reading about Jesus' teachings and a call to RADICAL discipleship.

Title: The Singer
Author: Calvin Miller
Subject: Fiction/Poetry
Readability: (1 =easy to 5 =difficult):1
Review: This book was recommended to me by a Milligan professor in a Jesus in the Arts class. It is an amazing poetic visualization of the life of Christ.

Title: A Long Obedience In the Same Direction- Discipleship in an Instant Society
Author: Eugene Peterson
Subject: Christian/Spiritual daily life
Readability: 2
Review: A Must Read...

Title: The Upside-Down Kingdom
Author: Donald Kraybill
Subject: Christian Kingdom Ethics and teachings of Christ
Readability: 3
Review: This is a timeless look at our culture through the eyes of 1st century Jewish/Christian life. This will also bring new perspectives into your walk and applications of Jesus' teaching into today's world (or mainly America). This book goes beautifully with Kit's Mere Discipleship suggestion by Lee C. Camp.

Readability: (1 =easy to 5 =difficult): 2
Review: This is an extremely interesting read. I was really drawn in by the book and couldn't put it down. I will not be a book that will change your life or one that you will necessarily agree will all the conclusions arrived at...but I like that. It is really a fascinating book.

Title: Under the Unpredictable Plant: An Exploration in Vocational Holiness
Author: Eugene Peterson
Subject: Ministry
Readability: (1 =easy to 5 =difficult):3
Review: Wonderful book for anyone in ministry in most any capacity but especially in a church setting. He uses the story of Jonah to help ministers essentially recover or maintain the one thing that is essential. I have been many of the places he describes and this book was very helpful to me in coming out of some ministry struggles and I just read it again recently in hopes of continued encouragement and guidance.
